AI agents drive 138M crypto payments; U.S. leads

AI agents processed 138M+ crypto payments via Coinbase’s x402, mostly under $0.10. U.S. wallets led, highlighting stablecoins’ role in efficient micropayments, per Chainalysis.

AI agents are fueling a surge in cryptocurrency payments, with over 138 million transactions processed via Coinbase’s x402 protocol on the Base blockchain, according to recent reports. Notably, more than 87% of these payments were for amounts under 10 cents, demonstrating the efficiency of stablecoins for micropayments that traditional card systems struggle to support. U.S.-linked wallets dominated the activity, accounting for 88.1% of payments related to AI model inference, while Chinese-linked wallets represented just 0.1%. This rapid growth in agentic commerce is backed by infrastructure from major financial firms and signals a shift toward automated, AI-driven payment systems. Although some research suggests scripts may contribute to this activity, the trend highlights the expanding role of AI agents in autonomously purchasing data, computing power, and digital services. Chainalysis’ analysis of x402 transactions points to a significant transformation in digital commerce.
