Petrobras, Cardano expand blockchain for green fuel tracking

Petrobras and Cardano Foundation are piloting blockchain projects to track sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, improving traceability and preventing double-counting of environmental benefits.

Cardano Foundation and Petrobras have expanded their partnership to develop blockchain solutions for tracking sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable Diesel R. Initially focused on employee education, the collaboration now includes research with PUC-Rio University and Ledger Labs. The CS-SAF platform tokenizes fuel sustainability attributes, aligning with the CORSIA aviation emissions framework. It supports a book-and-claim model, allowing environmental benefits to be allocated separately from the physical fuel. This approach helps prevent double-counting by recording the origin, recipient, and claim time for each benefit. The renewable diesel project aims to create a transparent record of production, transport, and use, supporting emissions reporting. Both initiatives are in the research phase, with no timeline or fuel volumes disclosed. These projects underscore Brazil’s growing adoption of Cardano blockchain for environmental accountability in the energy sector.
