Coinbase and Better launch Bitcoin-backed mortgages in US

Coinbase and Better Mortgage now let US borrowers use Bitcoin as collateral for mortgages, offering a 1% lender credit for Coinbase One members. The product follows Fannie Mae guidelines.

Coinbase and Better Mortgage have launched a crypto-backed mortgage product in the US, allowing eligible borrowers to use Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as collateral for home loans without selling their assets. This offering is now available to Coinbase One members and combines a standard conforming mortgage with a separate loan secured by pledged crypto, held in a custodial account on Coinbase Prime. Borrowers can access mortgages, home equity lines of credit, and refinancing options. Qualifying Coinbase One users receive a lender credit of 1% of the mortgage value, up to $10,000. Before the full launch, the waitlist for this product exceeded $260 million in potential loan volume. Structured according to Fannie Mae guidelines, the product does not trigger margin calls due to normal market fluctuations. This initiative aims to expand homeownership opportunities for crypto holders by integrating digital assets into traditional housing finance, enabling borrowers to retain their crypto exposure.
