In 2025, approximately 10% of U.S. adults used or invested in cryptocurrency, marking the highest level since 2022, according to a Federal Reserve report. This represents an increase from 2023 and 2024, though it remains below the 12% peak recorded in 2021. The majority of crypto activity was for investment purposes, with 9% of adults using digital assets to invest. Only 2% used cryptocurrencies for payments, and just 1% for sending money to family or friends. Notably, crypto usage was higher among unbanked adults, with 6% using it for transactions compared to 2% among those with bank accounts. Over a quarter of crypto payment users reported that businesses preferred digital assets, citing advantages such as speed, privacy, and lower costs. While payment companies have expanded crypto payment options, cryptocurrency remains primarily an investment tool for most Americans.
