Petro promotes sustainable Bitcoin mining in Colombia

Petro proposes a Bitcoin mining hub on Colombia’s Caribbean coast using renewable energy, involving the Wayúu community, and following Paraguay’s example.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has proposed transforming the country's Caribbean region into a Bitcoin mining hub by utilizing surplus renewable energy. He highlighted cities like Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha as potential sites for mining facilities, inspired by the successes of Paraguay and Venezuela, which have attracted investment through clean energy resources. Petro emphasized that Bitcoin mining powered by renewables can monetize excess electricity without impacting national consumption, while also helping to mitigate global warming—unlike mining operations reliant on fossil fuels. Additionally, he suggested that the indigenous Wayúu community should participate as co-owners in these projects, ensuring inclusive economic development. Petro cited Paraguay, which ranks fourth globally in hashrate due to its hydroelectric surplus, as a model for Colombia to emulate.
