You've been holding crypto on KuCoin. At some point, you start wondering whether leaving it there is the right call. Moving it to a self-custody wallet means you hold the private keys, not the exchange. This guide walks through exactly how to do that. Start by opening the Tangem app, then confirm the transfer arrived on-chain.

Before You Start: What You Need

Three things need to be in place before you send anything.

Tangem wallet, set up and ready. The Tangem app runs on iOS 16.0 or later (iPhone 8 and newer) and Android 6.0 or later with NFC support. If you're using a Tangem Cold Wallet card, the private key is generated inside the secure element during activation and never leaves the card. The Tangem Mobile Wallet creates a self-custodial wallet with a 12-word seed phrase as backup.

A verified KuCoin account with 2FA enabled. KuCoin requires completed identity verification (KYC) before you can withdraw. That means a valid government ID, a selfie or face verification, and an active 2FA method such as Google Authenticator. You'll also need your trading password and access to your bound email or SMS for the confirmation step.

Network awareness. This is the critical one. Before you send, identify which network you'll use for the withdrawal and confirm that your Tangem wallet is set up to receive on that same network. Tangem supports ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum, BEP-20 tokens on BNB Smart Chain, TRC-20 tokens on TRON, and SPL tokens on Solana, across 91+ blockchains. The network you select on KuCoin must match the network you're receiving in Tangem. A mismatch can make funds inaccessible.

Step-by-Step: KuCoin to Tangem Withdrawal

Here's the full sequence. Follow it in order.

Step 1: Get your Tangem receiving address. Open the Tangem app. Select the token you want to receive, for example, USDT on TRC-20. Tap "Receive." The app generates a wallet address and a QR code. Copy the address to your clipboard, or keep the QR code ready. Double-check which network is shown. The address and the network must both match what you'll select on KuCoin.

Step 2: Go to KuCoin Withdraw. On the KuCoin web, navigate to Assets → Overview → Withdraw. On the mobile app, tap the Assets tab and find the Withdraw option. Select the coin you want to send.

Step 3: Select the network: this step matters most. KuCoin shows the available networks for your chosen asset. For USDT, you'll typically see Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), and BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) as options, each with its own fee displayed. Select the network that matches your Tangem address. If your Tangem wallet is set to receive USDT on TRC-20, select TRC-20 here.

Step 4: Paste the address and enter the amount. Paste your Tangem wallet address into the recipient field, or scan the QR code. Enter the amount to withdraw. KuCoin will show the network fee and the amount you'll actually receive after the fee is deducted. Review both numbers before continuing. Note that KuCoin shows a minimum withdrawal amount per asset. For USDT, the minimum is 10 USDT.

Step 5: Confirm with 2FA. Click Withdraw → Confirm. A security window appears requiring your trading password, an email or SMS verification code, and your Google Authenticator (or equivalent) 2FA code. Complete all three. KuCoin then processes the withdrawal request and submits it to the blockchain.

Step 6: Verify arrival in Tangem. Once KuCoin broadcasts the transaction, a transaction ID (TXID) is generated and typically appears in your KuCoin withdrawal history as a link. Open the Tangem app and check your balance. You can also tap the transaction in the app's history to view the amount, fee, status, and a link to a blockchain explorer for full on-chain confirmation.

Choosing the Right Network

Network selection is where most withdrawal mistakes happen. By the same token, USDT, for instance, exists on multiple blockchains simultaneously. Sending USDT on BEP-20 to a wallet address that only supports ERC-20 USDT will fail. The funds don't arrive in the wrong place; they become inaccessible, and recovery is complex or impossible. Here's how the three main networks compare for stablecoin withdrawals:

ERC-20 (Ethereum) is widely adopted and compatible with the broadest range of wallets and applications. The trade-off is cost: ERC-20 USDT withdrawals from KuCoin can cost 10-15 USDT in network fees, depending on Ethereum congestion at the time.

TRC-20 (Tron) has minimal fees, around 1 USDT for the same USDT transfer, and fast confirmation times. It's a common choice for moving stablecoins when cost matters.

BEP-20 (BNB Smart Chain) sits between the two: lower fees than ERC-20, fast block times, and broad support. KuCoin lists the applicable fee for each network directly on the withdrawal screen, so you can compare before committing.

The rule is simple: check which network your Tangem wallet address is on before opening KuCoin. Then select that exact network on KuCoin. Don't assume.

Tangem supports all three of these networks, plus Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, XRP Ledger, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Avalanche C-Chain, and 91+ blockchains in total. If you're unsure whether Tangem supports the specific token and network you want to withdraw, open the app first and confirm the address exists before initiating the KuCoin withdrawal.

Withdrawal Fees and Timing

KuCoin charges fixed withdrawal fees per asset and network. A few concrete examples from current KuCoin fee documentation: BTC withdrawals carry a fee of approximately 0.0005 BTC with a minimum withdrawal of 0.002 BTC. ETH withdrawals carry a fee of approximately 0.01 ETH with a minimum of 0.02 ETH. USDT fees vary significantly by network, roughly 1 USDT on TRC-20 versus 10-15 USDT on ERC-20. Live fees and minimums are always shown on the KuCoin withdrawal screen and the Fee Rate page, so treat any published figures as reference points and verify them at the time of your withdrawal.

Exchange-side processing is typically within minutes to a few hours. After KuCoin submits the transaction to the blockchain, the time to confirmation depends on the network. Ethereum targets a block roughly every 12 seconds; Solana, around 0.4 seconds; Bitcoin, around 10 minutes per block. During periods of network congestion, a low fee can slow inclusion. Validators and miners generally prioritize higher-fee transactions from the mempool. You can't make the next block arrive sooner, but choosing an appropriate fee tier helps avoid unnecessary delays.

To keep costs down: use TRC-20 for USDT transfers when both sides support it. Withdraw larger amounts less frequently rather than many small transfers. Check the KuCoin withdrawal screen for current fees before confirming.

Why Move from KuCoin to Self-Custody?

KuCoin's EU entity, KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH, is MiCA-licensed as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider by Austria's FMA, authorized in November 2025 for custody, exchange, placing, and transfer services, with EU/EEA passporting. That's a meaningful regulatory step.

But a license doesn't change the fundamental structure of custodial storage. When your crypto sits on KuCoin, the exchange holds the private keys. You hold a claim. Custodial storage exposes users to counterparty risks, including platform hacks, insolvency, regulatory freezes, or operational restrictions. MiCA's CASP framework governs custodial service providers, not your off-exchange private keys. Even a fully licensed exchange can face future restrictions from the FMA or the EU on its business operations or product scope.

Self-custody shifts that. With a hardware wallet like Tangem, private keys are generated inside the secure element on the card and never leave it. A lost phone doesn't compromise the wallet because the keys are on the card, not the device. Tangem says it does not collect personal data, monitor transactions, or link IP addresses to wallet addresses.

The honest trade-off: self-custody puts the responsibility for key management and backups entirely on you. In Tangem's default seedless setup, losing all cards without a seed phrase makes funds permanently inaccessible. There's no provider-led recovery process. That's the cost of genuine key ownership, and it's worth understanding before you move.

FAQ

  • Tangem supports ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum, BEP-20 tokens on BNB Smart Chain, TRC-20 tokens on TRON, and SPL tokens on Solana, among 91+ blockchains. For most KuCoin stablecoin withdrawals, ERC-20, TRC-20, and BEP-20 are all available. Open the Tangem app, select the token, tap Receive, and confirm which network the address is on before selecting a network on KuCoin.

  • KuCoin's exchange-side processing is typically within minutes to a few hours. After the transaction is broadcast, on-chain confirmation time depends on the network: roughly 12 seconds per block on Ethereum, 10 minutes on Bitcoin, and under 1 second on Solana. The Tangem app may apply its own confirmation threshold before showing a deposit as complete. Check the transaction status in your KuCoin withdrawal history using the TXID link.

  • Fees are fixed per asset and network and change periodically. Current examples: approximately 0.0005 BTC for Bitcoin, 0.01 ETH for Ethereum, and around 1 USDT on TRC-20 versus 10-15 USDT on ERC-20 for USDT. The live fee is always shown on the KuCoin withdrawal screen before you confirm. Check it there rather than relying on published tables.

  • Yes, for EU users. KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH was authorized by Austria's FMA in November 2025 as a MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider for 5 of 10 MiCA services, with EU/EEA passporting. The license covers custody, exchange, placing, and transfer services. It does not cover trading platforms, execution, advice, or portfolio management services. FMA imposed conditions and temporary onboarding restrictions in 2026, so check the current KuCoin service availability for your region.

  • Tangem supports 16,000+ tokens across 91+ blockchains, so most assets available on KuCoin can be received in Tangem. For any token not automatically listed in the app, you can add it manually by entering the contract address. This is available for 60+ networks. If you're unsure about a specific token, check the Tangem app before initiating the withdrawal. Note that KuCoin's minimum withdrawal amounts apply per asset.

  • First, check whether KuCoin has broadcast the transaction. If a TXID appears in your withdrawal history, the transfer has left KuCoin and is on-chain. A prolonged pending state after broadcast commonly results from a fee below the network's current rate, meaning the transaction is waiting in the mempool. Use a blockchain explorer for the correct network to check the transaction's status and confirmation count. If the TXID shows as confirmed on the explorer but Tangem still shows as pending, the issue is on the application side. Contact Tangem support. Without a TXID, KuCoin is still processing the withdrawal. Contact KuCoin support directly.
