How to Use Tangem with Uniswap

You connect Tangem to Uniswap through WalletConnect, approve the session, then sign each transaction request with a card tap. Most people who start using Uniswap do it through MetaMask. That works. MetaMask has 30 million-plus monthly active users, and its browser extension plugs directly into Uniswap with a couple of clicks. The problem is that MetaMask is a hot wallet: your seed phrase and private keys live in browser or device storage, and phishing attacks, malicious extensions, and seed-phrase exposure are all risks associated with that setup.

 

Tangem takes a different approach. Your private key is generated inside a Samsung S3D350A secure-element chip certified at Common Criteria EAL6+ and never leaves the card. Every transaction, including every Uniswap swap, requires a physical card tap to sign. The key does not touch your phone's storage, your browser, or the internet at any point in the process.

Why Uniswap Needs a Self-Custodial Wallet

Uniswap is a decentralized exchange. Unlike a centralized platform that holds your funds, Uniswap interacts directly with your wallet address on-chain. That means you can't log in with an email and a password. You connect a wallet that you control. A custodial wallet won't work here. With a third-party account, a third party holds your private key and authorizes transactions. Uniswap has no mechanism to reach through to a custodian. You need a non-custodial wallet where you hold the key yourself.

 

That's the core requirement. But there's a second layer to understand: self-custody transfers responsibility. When you hold your own keys, there is no support desk that can recover your funds if something goes wrong. Loss of your private key or recovery phrase can mean permanent loss of access. This makes choosing a setup where the key is genuinely protected matter more than technical possession.

 

A hardware wallet addresses this directly. In the standard hardware-wallet model, the companion app prepares unsigned transaction data, passes it to the hardware device for signing, and only then broadcasts the signed transaction to the blockchain. The private key never reaches the internet-connected device. Tangem's signing flow works exactly this way, with the secure element on the card doing the signing and the Tangem app handling broadcast.

How to Connect Tangem to Uniswap via WalletConnect

Tangem connects to Uniswap through WalletConnect, the open protocol that links mobile wallets to decentralized applications. Uniswap is listed by Tangem as a compatible DEX available through this integration. The connection works across Ethereum and a range of EVM-compatible networks, including Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon, and others. Here's the connection flow, step by step.

 

Step 1: Open the Tangem app and navigate to WalletConnect. The app is free on iOS and Android. If you haven't set up your Tangem card yet, the setup takes under three minutes: open the app, tap the card, and follow the on-screen prompts to generate your key and set your access code.

 

Step 2: Go to app.uniswap.org on your phone's browser. Tap "Connect Wallet" and select WalletConnect from the list of connection options. Uniswap will display a QR code.

 

Step 3: Scan the QR code from the Tangem app. In the Tangem app, open WalletConnect and use the scan function to read the QR code. Alternatively, if you're already on mobile, you can tap Uniswap's WalletConnect deep link to open the Tangem app directly. Approve the connection when prompted.

 

Step 4: Select your network. Tangem WalletConnect supports Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, including Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and Polygon.

 

Your Tangem wallet address is now connected to Uniswap. The session stays active until you disconnect it, either from Uniswap's interface or from within the Tangem app's WalletConnect section. For a first ERC-20 swap, the session carries two requests: the token approval and the swap.

Signing Swaps, Approvals, and LP Positions from Cold Storage

A swap or approval on Uniswap becomes a transaction request, and you must tap your Tangem card before it can proceed. Your phone cannot approve the transaction on its own, even if it has your biometric data. The card tap is mandatory.

Token Approvals Come First

Before Uniswap can move an ERC-20 token from your wallet, it needs your explicit permission to spend that token. This is the approval transaction, and it's separate from the swap itself. When you try to swap a token for the first time, Uniswap will ask you to approve it. You'll see this as a transaction in the Tangem app before the swap transaction appears. Tap your card to sign the approval. Then the swap transaction arrives, and you tap again to sign that. Two card taps for a new token. Subsequent swaps of the same token take one card tap once it's already approved.

 

A practical note on approvals: review what you're signing before you tap. The Tangem app includes Blockaid-powered transaction simulation from app version 5.27 onward, which performs an off-chain dry run and shows you a human-readable preview of balance changes before you commit. If the preview doesn't match what you expect, don't tap.

Executing a Swap

Once you're connected and your token is approved, the swap flow is straightforward. Select the token you're selling and the token you're buying on Uniswap's interface. Set your amount. Uniswap will show you the expected output, the price impact, and the slippage tolerance. Review those numbers on the Uniswap interface before you confirm.

 

When you tap "Swap" on Uniswap, the transaction request travels to the Tangem app. The app displays the transaction details. Tap your card to sign. The signed transaction is returned to the app and broadcast to the blockchain. Your private key was used for exactly the duration of the NFC exchange, which operates over a 0-5 cm range using AES-256-encrypted communication.

 

Gas fees go to network validators, not to Tangem. The amount depends on network conditions and which chain you're using.

Security Layers That Protect You During a Swap

Cold-storage signing is the foundation. But Tangem's WalletConnect integration adds several layers on top of it that are worth understanding, especially for beginners interacting with DeFi for the first time.

 

Know Your dApps (KYDA) launched with version 5.27 of the app. It uses Blockaid-powered dApp verification to check the site you're connecting to and surface warnings if the dApp is flagged as suspicious. Uniswap is a well-known protocol, but the same connection flow works for less-established dApps where this check matters more.

 

Transaction simulation runs an off-chain dry run before you sign. The app presents a human-readable summary of what the transaction will do, including expected balance changes and any hidden operations it detects. This is the layer that catches drain transactions disguised as approvals.

 

Verified Transactions (VTX) use cryptographically signed transaction bundles so the preview you see can be checked against what actually executes. This prevents man-in-the-middle manipulation between the simulation step and the signing step.

 

None of these replaces reading what you're signing. But they make it substantially harder for a malicious site to slip an unexpected transaction past you.

 

One limitation to be aware of: Tangem is mobile-only. There's no desktop or web app. If you prefer to use Uniswap from a browser on your computer, you'll need your phone nearby to scan the WalletConnect QR code and tap your card to sign. The signing still happens on the card, but the initiation point is your desktop browser.

 

Private keys should never be shared or stored online, including in cloud storage or in phone photos of your recovery information. If you're using Tangem's default seedless backup model, your security depends entirely on keeping your physical cards safe. If all backup cards are lost and no seed phrase was generated, the funds are permanently inaccessible. Tangem's two- or three-card set model gives you redundancy: the cards are interchangeable, not hierarchical, so any card in the set can sign.
