Is Anthropic Tokenized Stock Safe? Risks, Fees, Liquidity

Is tokenized stock safe to hold?

A tokenized stock carries the same price risk as the underlying share, plus a set of structural risks the share itself does not have. Those extra risks come from the issuer, custody of the backing asset, the smart contract, off-hours pricing, liquidity, and fees.

A tokenized stock token is not a share of Anthropic. It carries no shareholder rights, no voting rights, and no direct claim against Anthropic, PBC. It is issued by a third party, and "is it safe?" is therefore a question about that third party's structure, obligations, and ability to perform. The safety question runs through: who issued it, who holds the underlying shares, what happens on-chain, how the price behaves when markets are closed, how easy it is to exit, what it costs, and what protections are absent.

Who is the counterparty, and what if the issuer fails?

Your claim is against the issuing entity, not against Anthropic. Two issuers are active in this space. xStocks are issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited, a Jersey special-purpose vehicle registered with the Jersey Financial Services Commission. Ondo Stocks are issued by Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited, a British Virgin Islands bankruptcy-remote SPV, with notes governed by Swiss law. Ondo tokenholders hold secured debt claims backed 1:1, plus a buffer, by underlying securities, with Ankura Trust Company holding a first-priority security interest and empowered to enforce the collateral after specified issuer-default events.

Ondo uses a bankruptcy-remote SPV: a legal entity whose assets are intended to stay separate from any wider group failure. That separation is the design goal. It is not a guarantee of repayment, not insurance, and not a regulator's backing. If the issuer defaults, recovery depends on the collateral liquidation process described in the applicable prospectus, not on any government scheme.

xStocks holders have no claim on the underlying shares themselves, only a contractual claim against the issuer secured by collateral.

Who holds the underlying shares?

The shares sit in the traditional financial system, held by custodians. How much each provider discloses about that arrangement varies.

Ondo states that the underlying stocks and ETFs are held by one or more U.S.-registered custodial broker-dealers, without naming them. Ankura Trust Company acts as both verification agent and security agent, and Ondo publishes daily attestations of holdings.

xStocks' documentation describes a three-party arrangement involving Backed Assets (JE) Limited, the custodians, and an independent security agent, with the underlying held in segregated custody accounts with regulated custodians. The xStocks documentation does not name the custodians or an insurance provider.

Here's what that means for you: verification rests on attestations and provider disclosure. You cannot independently check a share register. You are trusting the accuracy of what the issuer publishes.

What are the smart-contract and wallet risks?

The certificate is the token. A flaw in the contract or the loss of your keys is a loss of the instrument. Ondo's smart contracts have been audited by Spearbit and Cyfrin, among others. Audits reduce risk. They do not remove it. Ondo retains administrative controls: it can pause transfers, freeze or claw back sanctioned tokens, and mint, burn, or migrate tokens after errors or exploits.

Chain coverage spans multiple networks. Ondo Stocks lists Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Solana, with select tokens bridgeable to HyperEVM and Robinhood Chain. In a self-custody wallet, there is no issuer helpdesk to reverse a transfer or restore access. If you lose your private key or recovery phrase, there is no way to recover it.

Why can the price diverge from the share price?

Because the token keeps trading when the share does not. When the underlying market is closed, supply and demand in the pool can push a token's price away from the last official close.

Tokenized stocks can trade on-chain around the clock while the underlying market has set opening hours, and the same off-hours condition can show up as wider spreads and thinner liquidity. An off-hours market order, or any order on a thin venue, can execute at a price that would look absurd once the underlying market reopens.

How liquid is it, and what do spreads cost?

Liquidity sits per venue, not per asset. It is thinner off-hours and thinner on smaller venues. Fragmentation can hinder liquidity and affect bid-ask spreads. For eligible retail users, xStocks direct redemption after KYC has a current minimum transaction size of $5,000; secondary markets have no issuer-imposed minimum. Ondo discloses a $1 minimum.

What are the fees, and which are not disclosed?

The published fees are mostly distribution-level. Several issuer-level fees are not published at all.

What protections do not apply?

Tangem's own risk disclosure states that, for crypto-assets held in self-custody, FSCS, FOS, MiCA compensation, Swiss depositor protection, FDIC, NCUA, and SIPC protections do not apply. Tangem is not a bank or securities firm, and third parties provide transaction services. Tangem states that assets in the Real assets tab are issued by third parties and that it neither issues nor manages them.

Anthropic has stated that unauthorized transfers of its stock or interests in its stock, including tokenized securities and SPV transactions, are void and will not be recognized in its records. This page sets out risks and costs as they are publicly documented. It is not investment advice.

FAQ

  • No. A tokenized stock token is issued by a third party, not by Anthropic, and carries no shareholder or voting rights and no direct claim against Anthropic, PBC. The identified ANTHROPIC token, for example, is a synthetic blockchain-based derivative issued by PreStocks. Anthropic has stated that unauthorized transfers of its stock, including tokenized securities, are void and will not be recognized in its records.

  • Recovery depends on the collateral liquidation process in the issuer's prospectus. Ondo uses a bankruptcy-remote SPV, which is designed to keep the instrument's assets separate from a wider group failure. For xStocks, an independent Security Agent may take control of segregated collateral accounts and distribute proceeds. For Ondo, Ankura Trust Company holds a first-priority security interest and can enforce collateral after specified default events. Neither structure guarantees full repayment.

  • Yes. Moving a token to self-custody removes reliance on an exchange's solvency for the wallet-held key, but it does not remove issuer risk, collateral risk, smart-contract risk, liquidity risk, or the risk of price divergence from the underlying share. Self-custody also introduces a new risk: if you lose your private key or recovery phrase, there is no recovery process and no helpdesk to reverse the loss.

  • The token trades continuously, while the underlying stock trades only during market hours. Outside those hours, the token price is determined by supply and demand on whichever venue you use. On a thin venue or during an extended closure, that price can diverge significantly from the last official close.

  • Yes. Both xStocks and Ondo disclose some fees at the distribution level, but issuer-level management fees are not published by either provider. Ondo states that the quoted price may include an undisclosed spread or retained fee. xStocks' mint, redeem, and management fees are not disclosed in its public FAQ. Network gas fees on Ondo are paid by the investor and vary by chain. A cost that is not published before you buy cannot be compared with alternatives.

  • No additional protections apply. Tangem is not a bank or securities firm, and its risk disclosure confirms that FSCS, FOS, MiCA compensation, Swiss depositor protection, FDIC, NCUA, and SIPC protections do not apply to crypto-assets held in self-custody. Tangem states that assets in the Real assets tab are issued by third parties and that it neither issues nor manages them. A Tangem hardware wallet reduces key-theft risk by keeping the private key on a secure element offline, but that does not affect issuer, liquidity, or compensation-scheme risk.
