Grin coin is a private and lightweight open source project that utilizes the MimbleWimble blockchain protocol. This protocol was proposed by an anonymous author known as Tom Elvis Jedusor in July 2016. Main features
Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, Grin does not use addresses. Transactions require both wallets to communicate online, and the results are broadcasted to the network. This approach ensures that transaction history, including sender, receiver, and amount, is not recorded on the blockchain. As a result, the data size remains small, keeping the blockchain lightweight and allowing new nodes to join the network without downloading a large blockchain.
How it works
Grin was launched without an ICO, fundraising, or pre-mine, with developers contributing openly to ensure fair coin distribution. The consensus algorithm used by Grin is the Cuckoo Cycle proof-of-work, involving two hashing algorithms: Cuckoo-29 for GPU mining and Cuckoo-31 for ASIC mining. This design encourages miners to transition to ASIC mining for efficiency while maintaining fairness at the launch. Grin's mainnet was launched on January 15, 2019, and it is now available for mining and trading.
