æternity is a public, open-source blockchain protocol designed to enable next-generation decentralized applications with high scalability. It is built using the functional programming language Erlang, and its smart contract language, Sophia, is also functional. The project boasts a stellar team of developers, including Robert Virding, co-creator of Erlang, John Hughes, co-designer of Haskell, and Ulf Norell, co-designer of the Agda programming language for formal verification.

Unlike other blockchain platforms, the æternity protocol incorporates several essential technological features directly into its Layer 1. These include state channels for off-chain scaling, oracles for integrating real-world information, and a naming system to enhance user-friendliness. Additionally, æternity offers SDKs in various programming languages such as Javascript, GO, Python, and Java, along with middleware and a development suite to streamline smart contract development.
How it works
æternity employs the Bitcoin-NG consensus algorithm, developed by academics from Cornell University, and uses the Cuckoo Cycle mining algorithm to protect against Sybil attacks. The native cryptocurrency of the æternity platform, AE tokens, serve as both an economic unit of account and as ballots in community-driven on-chain governance votes.
