Both cards let you spend crypto at Visa merchants. The mechanics behind each are very different. Crypto.com's card is built around a tier system, subscription or CRO staking paths, and cashback rewards.

Tangem Pay is an optional, regulated payment feature integrated into the Tangem Wallet app. It provides a separate payment account funded with USDC or USDT held in non-custodial smart contract accounts. You can use a Visa card for purchases online or in-store, including through Apple Pay or Google Pay. Payments are processed through Visa and settled with merchants in fiat. Tangem Pay is provided by Paera LLC, and the card is issued by Rain.

How the Crypto.com Card Works

Crypto.com currently offers a Visa Signature Credit Card in the US and a Crypto.com Prepaid Visa Card in other markets. The prepaid card is topped up through a Crypto.com account, with loaded crypto converted into fiat/local currency for spending.

The card runs on a tier system. Four tiers are currently offered: Basic, Plus, Pro, and Private. Higher tiers unlock better cashback rates, paid in CRO. Reaching those tiers requires either a monthly subscription fee or a 12-month CRO staking lockup. The staking thresholds are meaningful: $500 CRO for Plus, $5,000 CRO for Pro, $50,000 CRO for the Icy White and Frosted Rose Gold levels, and $500,000 CRO for Obsidian. Cashback rates range from 0% on Basic to 5% on the prepaid card or 6% on the US Visa Signature Credit Card.

Rewards are deposited into your Crypto.com wallet in CRO. For the US product, you can also opt for BTC depending on the tier. The custody model is custodial. Your assets sit in a Crypto.com account, not in a wallet you control. That's a standard exchange arrangement, with all the convenience and counterparty exposure that implies.

Note: Crypto.com cashback rates and staking requirements change periodically. Verify current figures at crypto.com/cards before making any decisions based on specific numbers here.

How Tangem Pay Works

Tangem Pay is an optional, non-custodial payment feature in the Tangem app. It lets you spend stablecoins anywhere Visa is accepted.

Setup

You need a Tangem hardware wallet or a backed-up Tangem Mobile Wallet. You complete one-time KYC through Sumsub with a government ID and face check.

Compliance partners see only your Tangem Pay activity. Your main wallet history and holdings stay private.

Funding

Your funds stay in a smart contract that you control. Tangem Pay supports USDC and USDT on Polygon, Base, Arbitrum, and BNB Smart Chain.

In some regions, you can also fund your account by bank transfer.

Add your virtual Visa card to Apple Pay or Google Pay in the Tangem app. Tap your phone at a compatible terminal.

Visa authorizes the payment. Tangem Pay converts your stablecoins to USD at 1:1, and Visa pays the merchant.

Plans

Tangem Pay has two plans: Basic and Plus. You pick a plan during onboarding and can change it at any time in the app.

Rewards

Cashback pays out in USDC to your Tangem Pay account at the end of each billing cycle. You earn no points and no separate reward token.

Physical Card

The physical Visa card can be used online and in stores, and it can be used to withdraw cash at ATMs.

Fees

Tangem Pay charges no monthly account fees and no standard transaction fees. Top-ups pay network fees. Non-USD spending uses the standard Visa foreign-exchange rate.

The CRO Staking Trade-Off

Staking CRO to unlock Crypto.com card benefits is a real financial commitment. A lock-up period means those assets cannot be withdrawn until the staking period ends. Rewards don't accrue during unbonding. And the value of the staked position moves with CRO's market price.

If CRO appreciates during the 12-month lockup, the rewards program's effective cost looks reasonable. If the token declines, access to those cashback rates becomes substantially more expensive. The staking model creates exposure to a platform-native token, whether you want that exposure or not.

Which Crypto Card Is Right for You?

Choose the Crypto.com card if you spend a high volume on the card each month, you're comfortable with a subscription fee, or holding CRO and staking it for 12 months.

Choose Tangem Pay if:

  • You keep your crypto in self-custody. Your funds stay in a smart contract that you control, so you send nothing to an exchange.
  • You want to spend stablecoins with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Visa accepts the payment at any compatible terminal.
  • You want your main wallet history to stay private.
  • You want cashback in USDC. Basic users earn 1% and Plus users earn 2% on eligible purchases of $30 or more.
  • You spend at high volume. The Plus plan raises your daily POS limit to $50,000.
  • You travel often. Plus includes Visa Signature benefits such as airport lounge passes, travel insurance, and price protection.
  • You need cash. The physical Visa card withdraws cash at ATMs. Plus pays a 2% ATM fee, and Basic pays 4%.
