tBTC is a decentralized wrapped Bitcoin that is 1:1 backed by main-net BTC. It allows users to unlock their Bitcoin's value for various financial activities such as borrowing, lending, minting stablecoins, and providing liquidity. Unlike existing solutions that require sending Bitcoin to an intermediary, tBTC eliminates the need for a centralized third party, thus preserving Bitcoin's promise of secure, permissionless decentralization.
Main features
tBTC operates without centralized intermediaries by utilizing a randomly selected group of operators running nodes on the Threshold Network. These operators secure deposited Bitcoin through threshold cryptography, requiring a threshold majority agreement before any action is taken with the Bitcoin. This system protects against collusion and fraudulent seizure of deposits by rotating the selection of operators weekly.
How it works
The Threshold Network, formed from the merger of NuCypher and Keep networks, provides a decentralized network of staking nodes that deliver threshold cryptography services for web3 applications. The network is governed by a DAO, ensuring decentralized governance. Key services include Threshold Access Control for encrypted data sharing, tBTC v2 as a decentralized Bitcoin-to-Ethereum bridge, and thUSD, a decentralized stablecoin using ETH and tBTC as collateral.
